On Coupon Organization

I began using coupons about a year ago. As I've changed my shopping habits, I've also had to change the way that I organize my coupons. When I first started to use coupons, I only bought one newspaper a week and didn't really do many of the grocery deals. I was mostly using coupons for my trips to CVS, so every week I would clip them all and organize them according to their type.

My current system is drastically different. I usually buy at least 4 or 5 papers a week and sometimes as many as 10.

First, I sort the different inserts:

Then, I sort the pages so that all the identical pages are together:
Next, I put staples through the pages where the coupons are (I usually staple at least two coupons per page and try to make at least one of those on an item I think I'll use).
Once all the pages have been sorted in this manner, I put the stapled pages into a clear sleeve with a clip on top (to prevent any pages from falling out). I also write the date of the insert on the front page. Those sleeves go into a three ring binder.
Having all of the identical coupons stapled together is extremely helpful, especially when I'm preparing for one of the grocery store promotions.

The downside is that I can't really take advantage of any deals that I might just happen upon because I only carry the coupons that I know that I can use with me. This is actually just fine with me, though, because I often am shopping with at least one small child, so realistically I'm not able to shop for anything that I haven't planned for.

Shoppers is tripling coupons starting today and ending on the 28th! Be sure to check out your stores weekly circular here to be sure that they are participating. For this promotion, their ad states:

Unlimited Triple Manufacturer's Coupons up to $.99
On any single item, please limit yourself to four manufacturer's coupons. If the value of the triple coupon exceeds the retail price of the item, you will receive the item free.

I'm kind of disappointed that they aren't doing the double/triple promotion this time, but with all those $1/x coupons out there, this will probably make for an easier trip, inshaAllah (God willing).

It's time for Super Double Coupons at Kmart!

It looks like for this round of super doubles some stores will be doubling up to $3! Unfortunately, for me, my store is only doubling up to $2 (I'm also assuming that not all stores are participating). To see what your store is doing, go here and enter your zip code.

For coupons at Kmart, there is a limit of four of any item using double coupons and a limit of 75 coupons per customer per day. They do not accept internet coupons.

Harris Teeter Triple Coupons 1/1 - 1/4

It's confirmed! Four days of triple coupons! It looks like some stores will be also doubling P & G coupons valued between $1 - $2, so be sure to check your stores circular to find out if your store is participating. Here's a reminder of the tripling policy:

For Harris Teeter's triple coupons, they will only triple coupons valued at $.99 and under and will have a limit of 20 coupons per day per customer. Also, it is Harris Teeter's policy to only accept one coupon for BOGO items, they do not allow overages, and will only triple up to three identical items with manufacturer coupons (additional coupons for like item will be honored at face value). Harris Teeter has recently started accepting internet printable coupons, but you can only have two per transaction.

Kmart 1/4 - 1/9 Super Doubles (Now less Super)

It looks like, inshaAllah (God willing), Kmart will be doing it's "Super Doubles" promotion again from 1/4 to 1/9. This time, though, they will only be doubling up to $1 and will only allow 25 coupons per customer.

The limit on the Nature's Bounty Vitamins is actually 4, even though it's being advertised as 1. I found Vitamin D Vitamins to be the cheapest @ $4.99. I bought two for $4.99, used two of the $2/1 coupons, paid $.99 and got back $3 ECBs.
There is a SoyJoy deal that's supposed to go into effect 1/4, but is working now. It's for the 6 pack boxes. They cost $6 and are giving $6 ECBs.
At some stores, people have been finding Pantene products on clearance for $2.50 that still gave ECBs.
Other stores have the Infusium 23 on clearance for $3.75. With the $3/1 from the 12/28 P & G, that's only $.75 a bottle. Buy 4 bottles with coupons and the $3/$15, you'll pay $0.

Breakfast is Served!

Thanks to the fantastic bargain on Kellogg's cereal at Safeway last week, three of our shoppers were able to purchase over 80 boxes of cereal to donate to the local food shelf. Doubling up the Safeway deal of $5 off 5 cereals + using $1 off coupons for each box of cereal made for an incredible buy! The average cost per box was approximately $0.41; showing once again, that there really are blessings in bargains!
We also need to thank our friends out there who save coupons for us. Without their help, we could never purchase in such large quantities, at such great savings for such a worthy cause.

How I Plan a Trip to CVS

Before I go to CVS, I like to have a plan in mind regarding what I intend to purchase. Personally, my strategy for shopping at CVS is to keep my out of pocket expenses (OOP) as low as possible. Most of the time, I'm able to keep my total below $1. I do this by only shopping primarily for items that are either free after Extra Care Bucks (ECBs) or money makers after ECBs (preferably money makers!). I also keep my OOP low by planning my purchases around how many ECBs I currently have. If there are a number of items that I want to purchase and I know that I'll need to do more than one transaction, I like to plan my trip in Excel. The 12/21 - 12/22 deals are a perfect example. Since I have $23.99 in ECBs currently, here's what I'm planning for my first transaction during the 12/21 - 12/22 deals (click on the spreadsheet for a clearer view).So, inshaAllah (God willing), for that transaction, my total before coupons is $31.25. After coupons, it's $24.25 (only $.26 higher than what I have in ECBs!) and I'll get back $31.25 in ECBs.

Of course, I know going in that there is no way to guarantee that my purchases will work out as I plan them!

It's Don't Throw That Away Tuesday!

This tutorial provides a really cute way to reuse a mens' dress shirt by turning it into a toddler dress. Not exactly seasonal right now, but if you know that you might want to make some next spring/summer, you can hold on to any shirts that you might otherwise get rid of.

It's a really simple dress to make (as evidenced by the fact that I made one and my sewing skills are definitely subpar). Also, I think it was a good practice sewing project. Since I'm not very good at sewing, I'm hesitant to spend money on fabrics. My daughter really loves hers. I just spent about 10 minutes yesterday convincing her that she couldn't wear it because it's way too cold!

The shirt that I used to make the dress has already been used by three people... first, my dad, then me, and now my daughter!

When this mug chipped a couple months ago, I knew that I couldn't throw it away. It was of the first things that I ever bought for myself with my own money. As I recall, it was purchased on a late night study break run to Wal-Mart when I was in college. Ten years later, it certainly has served its purpose, but I still didn't want to throw away something that could still serve a purpose. I think it works well as a pot for these African violets ... and it kept me from making one of the impulse buys that comes the easist to me (and that I'm trying to curb) - the home improvement purchase.

Don't throw that away!

InshaAllah, on Tuesdays, I'll try to post about something that you would ordinarily throw away, but can still be used.

Today's post is about onion skins. I knew that I wanted to knit some socks for my brother, but didn't have the orange yarn that he wanted. I did, however, have some off-white yarn and onion skins. I also wanted there to be some brown in the mix. Imagine my husband's surprise when he came home to a pot full of onion skins, tea, and yarn!

To make the dye, you boil your onion skins for about five to ten minutes. Then, let the mixture cool down to room temperature. Next, submerge your yarn and bring to a slow boil. Allow to boil for about ten minutes. Cool again before washing.

There's a good coupon out right now here for $5 off M by Staples products. It has a minimum purchase of $5 and is valid until the 21st. I found these cool looking paper clips for $4.99. The coupon reads, "Minimum purchase requirement of $5 must be met," but I didn't have a problem using the coupon even though my purchase was $.01 under the minimum (although I was also purchases some padded envelopes).

Sometime last week, my husband found this coupon for $.50 off a Sunday Washington Post in the Express. Being the good coupon husband that he is, he also took the coupon out of papers left behind by his fellow passengers. I don't know if there will be any more of these in the future, but it's something to keep an eye out for. Especially since many local grocery stores will double it. This weekend, I used it on the double pack and it still worked and doubled... so 2 papers for $1!

Don't leave the refrigerator open!

One of the things I've been trying to teach my 3 year old daughter recently is not to leave the door to the refrigerator open too long. Of course, we're also trying to teach her to be more independent, so the two aren't exactly going hand in hand. Reminding her about conserving energy, though, has drawn my attention to ways that I can make our refrigerator more energy efficient. Here are some things I do:

If I have something warm I need to put in the fridge (like leftovers or tea) I wait until it's cooled down to room temperature.
If I'm going to use a frozen food in the near future, I let it defrost in the fridge. As the food defrosts, it's also cooling down my fridge!
I've done the dollar bill test to make sure that the door is closing properly. If your refrigerator door can hold a dollar bill tightly when closed, then it is sealing properly
I try to keep the freezer as full as possible and the fridge cleaned out. The freezer works more efficiently when full and the fridge works more efficiently when there is enough air for circulation around the food.
Also, I haven't but I know I should be checking and cleaning the freezer coils.

A Tale of Free Yogurt

If you want some free Breyers yogurt, get yourself this coupon ... or maybe you have it already, it's the $.50/1 Breyers product from the 10/26 RP (this was not the coupon that inserts in the DC metro area had). The only place I could find this yogurt was Giant.

When I saw this post on Money Saving Mom, I was really excited about getting some free yogurt. So, I went straight to my coupons. Unfortunately, I received a $1/2 instead of the $.50/1 that other regions got. No problem. I ordered coupons off of ebay. Then, once they arrived, I realized that my usual grocery store, Safeway, does not carry Breyers yogurt. Okay, so, I went to Giant today to load up on free yogurt. I don't normally shop at Giant, but I knew that they double coupons up to $.50 and the Breyers yogurt was priced at $.80. When I checked out, though, the coupon beeped and the cashier didn't know what to do. I explained that she might have to adjust the price of the coupon down. She didn't know how to proceed, though, and called her manager to "help out". The manager looked at the coupon and said, "this is for ice cream." I explained that no, it was actually for any Breyers product as stated in the print. She replied, "What do you want me to do, give you free yogurt?" I said, "I want you to charge me the price of the coupon minus the value of my coupon." She ended up having the cashier ring me up without the coupons and then gave me a $10 bill after I checked out. I'm guessing that's not what they're supposed to do, but it worked out pretty well for me!

Harris Teeter Triple Coupons 11/6 - 11/9

These days there are many reminders of why we should be frugal. The fall of the stock market, the biggest fall in consumer confidence in thirty years, and the housing crisis all seem to be the top stories anytime we turn on the news. The other day when I was watching CNN, I heard one of the commentators say that the current financial situation could mean that the United States will be forced into becoming a primarily cash economy. To me, that doesn't sound like an entirely bad thing.

On Giving

So, it's been mentioned before, but bears mentioning again that the purpose of this blog is to provide information on deals so that people can save money for their families.

The bigger purpose, though, is that you will save money for your family and also be able to help others. It's not a stretch to shop all the deals at a store rather than just for items that your family can use!

This blog, though, was started for a group of friends trying to give more to others. Right now, I think, there are about four (one of whom started just last week) of us who are buying and two or three others who are collecting coupons. The top picture represents only some of what we were able to collect within about a month and a half of saving. All that is pictured is being donated. The bottom picture is the stockpile being sorted and packed up. Right now, we are giving to a shelter in DC and the Dar al Hijrah food bank. InshaAllah (God willing), this is just the beginning. The more people we have collecting coupons and shopping and, of course, with the help of Allah (God), I know that we can do so much more!

My Kmart Super Double Run

I think that couponing really is catching on because I had coupons ready to buy a fair amount more, but the shelves were cleaned out! For information about where I got the coupons for these items, see here (with the exception of the Cascade Complete - I used a coupon from a home mailer). I ended up having to make three transactions. I went with a friend, so she did the second. Then, the third was because I picked up the wrong L'Oreal item (remember, it's only eye and face products that are BOGO).

The best part about this trip, though, (besides having a great friend like Tracey who doesn't coupon at all, but could be convinced to run all over Kmart with my two kids in tow) was the OOP. On the first trasaction, I used the $5/$50 and was given a $1.29 gift card. For Tracey's transaction, her total was $1.39, so she only paid a dime. Then, on #3 (which was just the four L'Oreal eyeshadows), my total was -$2.72, so the cashier handed me $2.72 out of the register! I don't think that all store allow overages like that, but I surely wasn't going to complain!

Alhamdulilah (All praise is due to God), I never thought that by using coupons, I could walk out of a store with that much merchandise and more money than I had walking in!

Kmart Super Double Coupons 10/26 - 11/1

It's already time again for Super Double Coupons at Kmart! For their Super Double Days, Kmart doubles all coupons up to and including $2. There is a limit of four of any item using double coupons and a limit of 75 coupons per customer per day. They do not accept internet coupons. Before you go, make sure that your store is participating here. Also, I've heard it suggested to have a copy of the Kmart circular in your hands when you checkout (with the Super Double Coupons mentioned on it) so that you are guaranteed to get your coupons doubled.

Don't forget to register for their emails here, and you'll receive a coupon for $5/$50!

Fortunately, shopping the deals at Rite Aid is easy enough that I was able to send my husband with kids in tow! He went early Sunday morning and took the weekly circular. He reported that a lot of the things weren't marked, so he wouldn't have known that they were part of the promotion without the Rite Aid circular.

Once home, he gave me the receipt and I entered the info onto my Single Check Rebate account. Alhamdulilah, it all went through, so at the end of October, I'll be able to request my $100+ check!

I know what you're asking, "What's a Catalina?"

Believe it or not, Catalinas already play a role in your daily life. You probably just don't realize it. A Catalina is a coupon that prints when you go to the grocery store and is handed to you after you pay for your groceries. What you may or may not realize is that the number and type of Catalinas that print is directly related to the items you have purchased.

Right now, there is a deal with Catalinas where you get a $4 off a future purchase when you buy a Glade scented oil warmer. At Safeway, these are priced at $4.99. But (and this is where it gets good), there is a coupon from the 9/28 SmartSource that makes these BOGO. That means, when you purchase two with coupon, you'll pay $4.99 and get $8 (in the form of two $4 off coupons) toward a future purchase, thus you've made $3.01 by purchasing the oil warmers!

Frugal Flop and Lessons Learned

Last week, I was able to take advantage of the K-Mart double coupon deal. Unfortunately, I made a couple mistakes that prevented this from being quite as good a shopping trip as I had been hoping.

First, for the Vaseline Men Lotion, this item was reported to be $2.99 online and the tag seemed to reflect that, but when it was rung up, it scanned as $5.49. I'm not sure if there was a smaller version that was the $2.99 price and it had just sold out or if it was mispriced. Either way, I probably should have just returned it when I realized the errror.

Second, I went on one of the last days of the sale. As a result, several of the items I was looking for had already been cleaned from the shelf. Never underestimate your fellow coupon shoppers!

Even with my mistakes, I still paid $15 for about $75 worth of merchandise. So, the third lesson is to be grateful for what I was able to accomplish! Sometimes, I get so caught up in getting the best deal and paying next to nothing particularly thanks to my CVS runs, I forget that paying more than a few dollars is okay. Really, it's okay. Alhamdulilah.

Personally, when I shop at CVS, I often have two intentions. I want to be able to buy things to give away to others who are less fortunate and also be able to buy things for my own family at lower costs. This weeks' deals provided a great opportunity to do both.

My first transaction was mostly items that I intend to donate.

CVS's Generous BOGO Policy

CVS allows you to use 2 coupons on BOGO deals – one for each item, even though one is already free. Not all companies allow that (e.g. Harris Teeter does not), so it’s good to know the policy before you go.

In this transaction, I used 2 $4/1 MQs (manufacturer’s coupons) on the BOGO razors, which were on sale for $8.79. That means I got 2 packages of razors for 79 cents total (reg. price would have been $17.58).

This is excellent for two reasons: 1) you get nice razors almost for free, and 2) it increases your total (without using ECBs), which is good if you’re planning to use a $/$$ offer (I had a $5/$25 CRT). BOGO deals are great if you have enough coupons because they have no offer limit, while ECB deals do.

NOTE: Schick Quattro razor refills will be BOGO for the week of September 21 – 27, so those same coupons may be good again, depending on the starting price.

On this trip, I bought two packages of razors, 2 tubes of deodorant and 1 bottle of contact solution for 16 cents total. Sorry there’s no pic, I already delivered some of it to my distribution avenue.

So, the total before coupons for these items would be $40.63 (of course, most of these items are also on sale, so the retail is even higher). After coupons, inshaAllah, it should be $10.63.

Since I'll be using only my own coupons for this purchase, I'll be keeping a number of these items for my own family, but inshaAllah, will also donate what we don't need.

I know that at this point many of you are thinking, "How much can we really buy for donation using coupons?" Well, here is, in part the answer:

These are the items I was able to purchase from CVS during the week of 9/7/2008 that I'm giving away for donation. These deals are all done, so this is meant only to give you an idea of what is possible. I absolutely could have purchased even more if I had more coupons to use. I also purchased two newspapers (for the coupons, of course!), some hand soap for my family, and a small toy to reward my daughter (age 2.5) for going to CVS so many times with me!

Even including those extra goodies that aren't pictured:

I only spent $5.76 OOP.
The total value of the items I have for donation this week is $104.84.
As far as ECBs go, I started the week with $7.99 in ECBs and I ended it with $24 in ECBs (so, my ECBs grew by $16.01!).
Plus, we have soap and an extra toy in our house. Not too bad!

$2/10 Coupon for CVS
