Using CVS trips to help your own family

|
Personally, when I shop at CVS, I often have two intentions. I want to be able to buy things to give away to others who are less fortunate and also be able to buy things for my own family at lower costs. This weeks' deals provided a great opportunity to do both.

My first transaction was mostly items that I intend to donate.

I bought:
  • L’Oreal Advanced RevitaLift anti-wrinkle serum @ $11.99
  • Nivea for Men body wash @ $4.99
  • Adidas any 2.8 oz. anti-perspirant @ $4.99
  • Balloon for Daughter (Dad let go of the free one from Trader Joe's!) @ $3.50
Subtotal: $25.47

I paid with:

  • Manufacturer coupons: (total = $5)
    • 1 $3/1 L'Oreal Advanced Revitalift anti-wrinkle serum
    • 1 $1/1 Nivea body wash
    • 1 $1/1 Adidas anti-perspirant

  • CVS coupons: (total = $4)
    • 1 $4/$20 (email coupon)

  • ECBs: (total = $13)
OOP: $3.47 + taxes

Got back: $20.98 ECBs

  • L'Oreal Advanced Revitalift anti-wrinkle serum = 11.99 ECBs
  • Nivea body wash = 4.99 ECBs
  • Adidas anti-perspirant @ 4 ECBs
So, this worked perfectly for building into my second transaction (which was solely for my own family). Here's transaction #2:

I bought:
  • 2 Cottonelle toilet paper 12-pack @ 6.49
  • 1 Huggies mega-pack diapers @15
Subtotal: $27.98

I paid with:
  • Coupons:
    • $1/2 Cottonelle (from the 9/21 RP)
    • $1.50/1 Huggies (from a home mailer)
  • CVS Coupons:
  • ECBs - $20.98 from transaction #1
OOP: $2.50 + taxes

Got back: $10 ECB from the Kimberly Clark deal.

So, for the day, I spent a total of $5.97 (+ taxes) OOP and ended up with $10 in ECBs ($3 less than I started with).

If you consider the loss in ECBs money spent, that means that I spent $8.97 for everything. I like to think that I spent $8.97 for the diapers (which would be an excellent deal) got everything else for free!

CVS's Generous BOGO Policy

|
CVS allows you to use 2 coupons on BOGO deals – one for each item, even though one is already free. Not all companies allow that (e.g. Harris Teeter does not), so it’s good to know the policy before you go.

In this transaction, I used 2 $4/1 MQs (manufacturer’s coupons) on the BOGO razors, which were on sale for $8.79. That means I got 2 packages of razors for 79 cents total (reg. price would have been $17.58).

This is excellent for two reasons: 1) you get nice razors almost for free, and 2) it increases your total (without using ECBs), which is good if you’re planning to use a $/$$ offer (I had a $5/$25 CRT). BOGO deals are great if you have enough coupons because they have no offer limit, while ECB deals do.

NOTE: Schick Quattro razor refills will be BOGO for the week of September 21 – 27, so those same coupons may be good again, depending on the starting price.

On this trip, I bought two packages of razors, 2 tubes of deodorant and 1 bottle of contact solution for 16 cents total. Sorry there’s no pic, I already delivered some of it to my distribution avenue.

The breakdown:
  • 2 Schick Quattro women’s disposable razors (3 ct) @ $8.79 (on sale + BOGO)
  • 1 Complete Moisture Plus contact solution @ $10.49
  • 1 Right Guard deodorant @ $2.99 (reg. $4.49)
  • 1 Soft & Dri deodorant @ $2.99 (reg. $4.49)

Subtotal: $25.26 (after subtracting the $8.79 for the free razor pack)

I paid with:

Manufacturer coupons: (total = $11.75)
  • 2 $4/1 Schick Quattro
  • 1 $2/1 Complete contact solution
  • 1 $1/1 Right Guard
  • 1 $.75/1 Soft & Dri
CVS coupons:
  • 1 $5/$25 CRT (cash register tape)
ECBs: $9

Total OOP: $.16

Total saved: $37.84

Got back $6 ECBs
  • 2 deodorants @ 2 ECBs each = 4 ECBs
  • 1 Complete contact solution = 2 ECBs

In summary, I spent $0.16 OOP and $9 in ECBS to get $37.05 worth of products and $6 ECBs.

Free After Coupon Items

|
For your CVS shopping, it is often beneficial to have an item or two that is free after coupon. These items will help you to reach a higher total, which is perfect when you have a $ off coupon. Right now, there is a $2/10 coupon available to anyone (and there is no limit on the number of times you can print this coupon) and you might have received another $ off coupon in either your email from CVS or on the end of a receipt.

Free after Coupon items:
  • Clean and Clear trial size $.99
    • $1/1 any Clean and Clear from the 8/3 SS
  • Almay Facial Cleansing Bar $.99
    • $1/1 any cosmetic Almay item from the 8/3 SS
    • $1/1 any cosmetic Almay item from the 9/14 SS
  • Johnson's Buddies Soap (these are priced from $.99 to $1.19)
    • $3/3 any Children's Motrin, Children's Tylenol, Desitin, Johnson's Buddies, Johnson's Shampoo Or Conditioner, Or PediaCare from the 9/14 SS
Note, if you are buying free after coupon items and the value of the coupon is higher than the purchase price, the coupon will beep for the last item you buy. For example, if you are buying three Clean and Clear trial size items at $.99 each using three coupons, the first two coupons will go through without a problem, but the third coupon will beep. The coupon will have to be adjusted accordingly by the person at the cash register.

What's Possible

|
I know that at this point many of you are thinking, "How much can we really buy for donation using coupons?" Well, here is, in part the answer:

These are the items I was able to purchase from CVS during the week of 9/7/2008 that I'm giving away for donation. These deals are all done, so this is meant only to give you an idea of what is possible. I absolutely could have purchased even more if I had more coupons to use. I also purchased two newspapers (for the coupons, of course!), some hand soap for my family, and a small toy to reward my daughter (age 2.5) for going to CVS so many times with me!

Even including those extra goodies that aren't pictured:
  • I only spent $5.76 OOP.
  • The total value of the items I have for donation this week is $104.84.
  • As far as ECBs go, I started the week with $7.99 in ECBs and I ended it with $24 in ECBs (so, my ECBs grew by $16.01!).
  • Plus, we have soap and an extra toy in our house. Not too bad!

How to Shop at Rite Aid

|
Generally speaking, the deals at Rite Aid are more straightforward than at CVS, but less abundant since the limit for all SCR purchases is one.

  1. Be part of the system:
Deals at Rite Aid work through a rebate system, called Single Check Rebates (or SCRs). You'll need to sign up to be a part here.

  2. Know the system:
The items that generate SCRs vary week to week and are featured in the weekly Rite Aid circular that is distributed with the Sunday newspaper. These circulars can also often be found at the front of the store on a display when you walk in. After you make a purchase with the appropriate SCR generating items, you will return home with your receipt. Once home, you'll sign into your SCR account and enter the appropriate information from your receipt. At the end of every month, you'll sign into your account to request your check.

  3. Work the system:
Much like at CVS, you'll want to purchase items that generate as much (if not more) money in SCRs than you have spent out of pocket.

What We are Doing

|
God willing, it is our goal to start collecting items to donate that we purchase for little to no cost by using coupons.

We have three groups of people who are involved:

1) Buyers
2) Coupon Savers (who don't have to even clip since nowadays coupons are archived online)
3) Distributors/People in Charge of Donation

InshaAllah, this blog will serve all three groups of people as follows,

1) It will aid buyers by providing information on what deals they should be looking for during any given week and how to maximize their savings.
2) It will update coupon savers on what to coupon inserts to be looking for each week in the newspaper circulars and which coupons will need to be printed (coupon websites usually limit the number of coupons that can be printed from any computer to two).
3) It will motivate all involved by keeping record of what we've been able to donate.

How to Shop at CVS

|
  1. Be a part of the system:
To do so, you'll need to have a CVS ExtraCare card. You can sign up in-store to receive a card immediately, or sign up on CVS's website here (you'll receive your card by mail within a week or so).

  2. Know the system:
The ExtraCare system works by giving you discounts on certain items and, more importantly, generating "Extra Care Bucks" (aka ECBs) when you purchase certain items. ECBs are printed on the end of your receipt at checkout and are used like cash on any future CVS purchase.

This is what ECBs look like:
The items that generate ECBs vary week to week and are featured in the weekly CVS circular that is distributed with the Sunday newspaper. These circulars can also often be found at the front of the store on a display when you walk in.

The weekly deals are also available for viewing on a number of message boards, such as Slickdeals and Hot Coupon World.

  3. Work the system:
To fully take advantage of the ECB system, you'll want to purchase items that generate as much (if not more) money in ECBs than you have spent out of pocket. Sometimes, this will be a straightforward purchase where the item will cost exactly the same as the ECB it generates. Other times, you will need to use coupons to push the price down. There are even cases when the use of a coupon will push the price below the amount you earn in ECBs, thus earning you money!

InshaAllah, it will be our goal to provide information on a weekly basis regarding the best deals and scenarios that will maximize your ECBs.

  4. Remember these tips:
So, now that you have a basic idea about how all this works, here's some practical information for your shopping trip.

When you check out, this is the order you'll want your items and coupons processed:
    • ECB card
    • Your items
    • Any CVS $ off coupons; for example, $2 off a $10 purchase (written $2/10)
    • Manufacturer's coupon
    • ECBs

Your goal any time you shop at CVS should be to keep your Out-of-Pocket (aka OOP) cost as low as possible. Using this blog to help you plan out your trips before you go to the store is one way to do that. Also, if you have any prescriptions, you may want to be on the lookout for coupons that award you gift cards for transferring (CVS will accept competitors coupons).
